Media mogul Cathy Hughes is the founder and Chairman of Urban One, Inc., the largest African American owned broadcast and media company in the nation. We salute Ms.Hughes as an exemplar of the HBCU spirit of excellence and legacy.

Ynez is a 22 year old, 2018 graduate of Winston Salem State University (WSSU) and proud mother of one-year-old Jace Hudson.  While hers wasn’t always a story of happiness, she found her support system, her family and her ultimate happiness right on the campus of her beloved HBCU.   “I had Jace with me my senior year at WSSU,” Ynez said proudly. “But it was extremely challenging,” she recalled.  That challenge, and the associated hardships of finding affordable childcare, diapers, formula and even a compassionate ear, led Ynez to found College...

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” recalled Jemia Storey.  “August 26, 2000 was my first day as a freshman at Hampton University.  I moved into Twitchell Hall and Hampton became my ‘Home by the Sea.’  Coming from Homewood, Alabama, a predominately white suburb of Birmingham, to being 18 years old, over 700 miles from home, and starting a new chapter in my life was surreal.  I was excited, scared, intrigued, and very impressed by the student leaders on my campus.”
